James Barnett
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Life can be difficult, and many of the circumstances we face are beyond our control. Yet the struggles we experience within—how we see and treat ourselves, others, and the world—often arise outside our conscious awareness. Unconscious patterns, feelings, and ways of relating can create anxiety, depression, disconnection, and a sense of being stuck.
Therapy offers a safe, non-judgemental space to explore these deeper experiences at your own pace. Together, we can begin to understand where your struggles come from and how they continue to affect your life. With greater understanding, new possibilities can emerge—bringing more freedom, connection, joy, and meaning to your relationships and everyday life.

Psychodynamic therapy explores how early experiences, including inadequate parenting, emotional pain, and trauma, shaped the unconscious patterns that we used to cope and protect ourselves. While these patterns may once have been helpful, they can continue into adulthood in ways that no longer serve us, contributing to distress and limiting our ability to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life.
In therapy, we gently explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion. By bringing them into awareness, you can develop a kinder and more profound understanding of yourself and discover new ways of relating to yourself, others, and the world. This can create greater space for authenticity, freedom, and connection.
Beginning therapy can feel like a significant step, but you do not have to take it alone. I offer a confidential, accepting space where you can speak openly and be heard without judgement. With empathy, care, and curiosity, we will work together to understand what brings you to therapy and find a path toward healing and greater self-understanding. If you feel ready to begin, I invite you to get in touch.
Taking the first step can feel daunting, but reaching out is simple and there is no pressure to commit. You are welcome to contact me by email, text or telephone, to arrange an initial consultation. During this you can ask any questions, and share what has brought you to therapy. I will explain how I work, listen to what you need, and help you decide whether therapy with me feels right for you.ake the first step to help.

Treatment Approach
My training in psychodynamic psychotherapy includes many theorists and modalities – Psychoanalytic, Trauma and parts work, Attachment Theory, Relational, Self Psychology, Klein and Winnicott. Each of these are like the facets of a gem used to clarify and deepen my understanding of my client and their difficulties – as useful theories, not a limiting box to put them in.
